A 19-YEAR-OLD Paramakatoi farmer was Monday sentenced to three years in jail and fined $40,500 by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after pleading guilty to marijuana possession.
Neville Melville, of Paramakatoi Village, Upper Demerara Berbice Region, confessed that on January 11 at his home he had 27 grams of cannabis in his possession.
According to reports, police ranks acting on information received, visited Melville’s home and conducted a search during which the marijuana was found under his bed.
In court, the unrepresented accused explained that he had bought the marijuana for $500 which he uses to make tea for his sick niece.
