MINISTER of Communities, Ronald Bulkan has disclosed that the issue relating to delayed payment of teachers’ salaries in Region Nine has been rectified. Payment of December salaries for teachers in Region Nine is expected to be done today, Thursday December 22.A statement from the Department of Public Information noted that the government regrets and apologises for the delay in the December payments, which the government recognises has caused some frustrations.
According to the statement, Minister Bulkan explained that the payment will be made to those teachers who are affected by a shortfall in allocation in the sum of $1.2million.
Late payment to the affected Region Nine teachers was raised by opposition Member of Parliament, Priya Manickchand during consideration of estimates for the Ministry of Education. However, Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry answered that payment of salaries in the regions falls under the portfolio of the Minister of Communities.
