No bail for woman allegedly caught with ‘cocaine’ in suitcase

ANDRA Paula Winfield, who was allegedly caught with almost six pounds of cocaine hidden in the walls of her suitcase at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), was yesterday denied bail and remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge.Winfield,42 of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara was arraigned in a Georgetown court before Magistrate Annett Singh on a charge that she had 2.548 kilograms in her possession for trafficking on December 16 at the CJIA.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge. Winfield was represented by attorney Max McKay.

According to Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharat Mangru on the day in question Winfield was checking in at the airport for a flight destined for Toronto, Canada.

Mangru noted that when the woman was questioned by Immigration officers about her Canadian address she could not provide them with an answer.

The officers became suspicious and checked Winfield’s suitcase where it was discovered that the walls inside were false and a quantity of narcotics was concealed inside.

The Prosecutor objected to bail on the ground that no special reason was raised by Winfield’s lawyer for the granting of bail.

The Magistrate ruled in the prosecution’s favor and remanded the woman until January 10.
