Shock at resignation of Law Dept. Head

Dear Editor,

I WRITE this letter in utter shock at the resignation of Mr. Ronald Singh, Head of the Law Department at the University of Guyana. As a former alumnus, I find it most disturbing that someone of the calibre of Mr. Singh should resign; he was instrumental in bringing about the betterment of the department. Whilst studying at the University of Guyana, I found that Mr. Singh guided students in a direction to ensure they were greeted with a pass grade when they open their academic profile. He was also instrumental in ensuring that other lecturers did the same.

I can testify about the vindictive nature of some other lecturers in the department, but that would take up 89 pages of valuable newspaper space.

Mr. Singh had aimed to do what the past departmental head had not done; that is: have an extremely approachable personality whenever a student had an issue. There was no reason to take three deep breaths before entering his office. Many of the arguments made by students and communicated to the other relevant authorities were often ignored. This begs the question why.

Why is Mr. Singh, as the head of department, resigning? It is up to the students and alumni to assume the reasons, but the answer is clear as day: The dark days continue to be upon us; political and administrative victimisation will continue. No wonder emigration seems to be the only viable alternative. I will return to Guyana when the economy has stabilized, poor decisions are seldom made, and certain ministers and the administration of all sectors are thoroughly examined.

To Mr. Singh I wish all the best in the future, and I hope that the level of disrespect given to you by your superiors, and even those below you, is not meted out to you again.

I fear that I will be victimized for writing this letter, especially by the University of Guyana. So I ask to remain anonymous.
Regards,
FORMER ALUMNUS
