Indian executive explores investments in rice, sugar

PROMINENT Indian lawyer and business executive Dr. V.R.S. Sampath visited Guyana during the past week and held talks with Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and other key Government and private sector officials, including the Private Sector Commission and the University of Guyana, in regard to bringing investors to Guyana.A release from the Office of the Prime Minister has said that Dr. Sampath, a native of Tamil Nadu, is President of the Madras Development Society and founder of the World Tamils Economic Foundation, both of which network with strategic investors worldwide.

He has indicated strong interest in investing in the rice, sugar, granite and Information Communication Technology (ICT) sectors, and in the establishment of a medical school and hospital in Guyana.

His visit, aimed at coordinating investor missions to Guyana, follows Prime Minister Nagamootoo’s attendance at the World Tamils Economic Conference in Chennai, India during October last.

The Tamil Nadu advocate met with vice-presidents Carl Greenidge and Khemraj Ramjattan; Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin; Agriculture Minister Noel Holder and other ministers on Thursday last at Parliament Buildings. He was also chief guest at the Prime Minister’s reception held at his residence on Friday evening.

Dr. Sampath has committed to returning to Guyana in the first quarter of 2017 with a team of investors, to further pursue investment opportunities.

During his one-week scouting mission in Guyana, he also visited Berbice, where he looked at the investment potential in the agriculture sector.
