FOLLOWING heavy rainfall yesterday, parts of the capital city were left inundated, and persons and vehicles had to battle high levels of water while traversing the streets.

The Guyana Chronicle discovered in a drive around town that streets such as Quamina, Albert, and even parts of South Ruimveldt were heavily flooded, and persons had to hitch up their pants to exit their yards. Commuters indicated that they expected this level of rainfall at this time of the year. They said the water levels are usually higher, but thanks to the constant efforts of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to clean and desilt drains, the amount of water is not as high as was the case in previous years.

Meanwhile, efforts to contact the M&CC for a comment on the flash flooding proved futile. Nonetheless, forecasts from the Guyana Meteorological Office (MET Office) has indicated that more rain and thunderstorms are expected over the next three days, with today’s amount of rainfall expected to be between 0.0mm and 40.0mm.
