AFTER bagging four gold medals during the first four nights of competition in the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament in Barbados, Guyanese boxers added a further five gold medals and a silver to their overall tally, assuring them of overall championships honours.According to reports from Barbados, winning gold medals for Guyana on Saturday evening were Christopher Moore, who contested in the lightweight division and he secured a 3-0 verdict against Grenada’s Nelson Cyrus.
Joel Williamson, fighting in the finals of the lightweight division in the Elite category, forced the referee to stop his contest against Jamaica’s Ricardo Carter,to win gold.
Guyana’s lightweight Colin Lewis, contesting the light welterweight division of the Elite category, caused the referee to stop his fight against Barbados’ Derek Hymer during the first round.
Desmond Amsterdam then added another gold medal to Guyana’s tally as he secured a third round Technical Knock-Out win over Jamaica’s Jonathan Hanson in their middleweight contest of the Elite category.
Guyana’s Elite category super heavyweight boxer Jason Barker then crowned the evening off with a 3-0 win against Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown.
Guyana’s other Elite boxer, Keeve Allicock, who was on show on Saturday and from whom much was expected had to settle for a silver medal as he lost via TKO in the second round in his flyweight contest against Barbados’ Jabali Breedy.
The five gold medals that the locals won on Saturday evening added to the four they had earlier won during the early stage of the competition.
The successful `gold’ hunt was started by Isaiah Moore who was the lone junior boxer on tour and who competed in the flyweight division.
Moore forced the referee to stop his flyweight contest against Barbados’ Roshawn Holder in the first round of their final.
Then followed Kevin Allicock who forced the referee to stop his flyweight contest in the Youth division during the first round against Barbados’ Stephan Harding,to claim gold.
That was on Thursday evening. The following night (Friday), Akeem Mounter, fighting in the light heavyweight division of the Youth category, secured a 3-0 points decision victory over Anguilla’s Curlian Richardson.
As though that was not enough `gold’ for one night, Guyana’s Elite category representative Clairmont Gibson sought and found even more `gold’ as be out foxed and out-boxed Barbados’ Ajayi Jones, winning by a 3-0 points verdict.
To date, with only Markember Pierre to stamp his authority, the locals are almost certain to win overall championship honours.
The boxers are being guided by coaches Sebert Blake (head coach) and assistant coaches Adrian Thompson and Clifton Moore.
The team manager is Guyana Boxing Association’s vice-president Maurice Rajkumar.
