Dear Editor
THE Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) hereby responds to articles which were published in Stabroek News online on 6 December,2016 and was titled ‘GAWU accuses GuySuCo of stalling on wages talks’, and in the Kaieteur News on December 7, 2016 and titled, ‘GuySuCo wants salary negotiations delayed amidst budget debate – union says’.On December 6, 2016, GuySuCo dispatched a correspondence to the Chief Labour Officer at the Ministry of Social Protection. The letter was in response to an earlier communication inviting the corporation to attend a meeting on December 7, 2016, as a part of the conciliation process for GuySuCo/GAWU Annual Production Incentive (API), 2016.
The corporation’s letter stated as follows: ‘With GuySuCo’s future direction being debated in our Parliament, the corporation respectfully requests that discussions surrounding matters of the industry (Annual Productive Incentive – API) be put on hold during those discussions.’
The letter further stated that: ‘It is critical that all concerned obtain a better appreciation of the way forward as envisaged by the corporation’s shareholders.’
Based on the current circumstances stated in the letter and which is known to the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), GuySuCo is of the view that this is a reasonable request.
