AN 11-member team of boxers, along with two coaches and a management team, will depart Guyana tomorrow to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Development Boxing (CDB) championships scheduled for that island from December 7 to 12.According to a Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) source, the Association had long ago planned to send a team to the championships based on the amount of funds garnered from their various fundraising activities, including the staging of its national novices, intermediate and open championships.
According to the source, the Association was targeting a G$2M budget to send a full complement of 11 boxers plus two coaches and a management team.
Early last month, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) had donated $500 000 towards the GBA’s cause and since then, other sports enthusiasts and private individuals came on board, but the sums pledged did not reach the required amount. This caused the president of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, to undertake a 100-mile walkathon in an effort to garner the required amount.
The walk started last Friday from #43 Village, Corentyne, Berbice at 08:30hrs and concluded at 11:30hrs on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Ninvalle, along with Guyana’s only Olympic medallist Michael Anthony Parris and his wife Ursula, boxing coaches Adrian Thomas (Republican), Sebert Blake (Forgotten Youth Foundation) Clifton Moore (Essequibo), Orlon Rogers (Pocket Rocket), GBA’s Technical Director Terrence Poole, FYF boxer and national flyweight champion Richard Subratee and host of Maximum Sport Max Massiah, started the walk which saw the team stopover in New Amsterdam on Friday evening, then continued the trek the following day, stopping briefly at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, before journeying to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for the finish.
During the course of the walk, it was reported that the GBA president’s efforts netted a much needed $600 000 and after the walk, this amount was bolstered by pledges of financial support from a number of boxing enthusiasts, including former national welterweight champion Michael Benjamin, former world champion Gary St Clair, former professional boxer Max Massiah, Director of Tang Soo-Do International, Kyosanien Roland Eudoxie and LIAT airlines who promised to give the group concessionary fares in the interest of the development of the sport.
