Jadeja, Ashwin guide India to brink of victory

INSPIRED by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, India are on course to take a 2-0 series lead after reducing England to 78-4 in their second innings in Mohali.
The tourists trail by 56 runs at stumps on day three of the third Test, with just six wickets remaining and Virat Kohli’s team having only batted once.
The sole hope of any meaningful resistance for Alastair Cook’s men appears to be Joe Root, who will resume on 36 today, alongside Gareth Batty (0 not out).

Beginning the day on 271-6, India reached 417 all out, a lead of 134. Jadeja built on an overnight score of 31 to get to a career-best 90, falling just short of a ton when he picked out Chris Woakes at long-on off Adil Rashid (4-118).
Ashwin had earlier departed for 72, edging to Jos Buttler trying to drive Ben Stokes (5-73), bringing an end to their stand of 97 for the seventh wicket. The tail continued to wag, though, Jayant Yadav (55) supplying a valuable first Test half-century as he and Jadeja put on 80.
England were then forced to rearrange their top order, Haseeb Hameed unable to bat due to a finger injury, prompting Root to be elevated to partner Cook.

The skipper survived two lbw appeals in the space of four deliveries, with one India review overturned and a second from Cook upheld, as he passed Steve Waugh to sit 10th on the list of leading Test run-scorers with 10 934, behind Allan Border.
Nothing could save the captain, though, when Ashwin (3-19) bowled him through the gate for 12.
Moeen Ali could only add five from 20 deliveries before chipping Ashwin to Jayant at mid-on.
Wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel did brilliantly to hold a catch when Jonny Bairstow (15) tried to chop down on a delivery that stayed low from Jayant (1-12).
And a final late blow came when Stokes (5) fell victim lbw to Ashwin, a successful review showing the delivery hitting the top of off stump.
