VYBZ Kartel is adamant that he is not recording music in prison, despite coming under increased pressure from authorities. On Tuesday, Jamaican law enforcement moved in and conducted a search of the dancehall deejay’s cell block where contraband was found. He was subsequently relocated to another prison, and placed in confinement pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
Speaking with Rolling Stone through his attorney, Tom Tavares-Finson, Vybz Kartel made it clear that he has not been recording in prison, and all his recent singles are as a result of his hard work in the years before his arrest.
“I’ve always been a prolific songwriter, and I record at breakneck speed as well, so I have a lot of surplus material to choose from,” the former Portmore Empire head said. “There is a recording studio at another correctional facility [in Jamaica], but none here; cellphones, laptops, or any Internet-capable instrument are prohibited items,” Kartel said.
A ‘rep’ for the incarcerated dancehall star backed up his story, telling us that all his new music are as a result of a massive catalogue of previously recorded unreleased material. “We have hundreds and possibly thousands of unreleased material for Vybz Kartel, so, for years to come, we will still be putting out new music,” his ‘reps’ told Urban Islandz.
