THE Major Crimes Unit (MCU) in Georgetown has made a breakthrough in the case of Faiyaz Narinedatt, the father of two whose lifeless body was found on the No. 70 Public Road earlier this month. Two suspects who were detained confessed to their involvement in the beating to death of Narinedatt. According to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, two of the seven persons who were detained have since confessed to ranks of the MCU about their involvement in the crime. The confession has confirmed what the relatives of the victim have been saying since the discovery of the body, that Narinedatt had been murdered and was not the victim of a hit-and-run accident as it was previously classified by the police in ‘B’ Division.
The confession into the beating to death of Nariendatt also comes on the heels of several requests and pleas for a thorough investigation by ranks outside of Berbice from relatives of the victim. This prompted the MCU to take over the investigation and seven persons were subsequently detained earlier in the week. They were identified by eyewitnesses as being the persons involved in the death of Narinedatt.
According to a source close to the investigation, one of the detainees who confessed is said to be one of the persons that helped place the lifeless body of Narinedatt into the trunk of his car and dumped it on the public road before attempting to run it over to make it appear to be an accident. The source further stated that eyewitnesses told ranks that the incident stemmed from a sexual advance from the host of the party towards Nariendatt. This publication understands from the source that Narinedatt was urinating when the man approached him and tried to touch his private parts. Narinedatt became upset and accosted the businessman by dealing him two slaps. The businessman then reportedly ordered one of his bodyguards to “get rid of him,” referring to Narinedatt that he (businessman) “will deal with it.”
Relatives related that eyewitnesses’ account of the incident stated that an altercation ensued and several other persons joined in beating Narinedatt. He allegedly fell into a trench and his lifeless body was fished out and placed into the trunk of one of his attackers’ car. Eyewitnesses stated to relatives that he was placed on the road and the very car that took him attempted to run over his body to make it appear as though he had died as a result of an accident. However, the car was too low and another car was called to run over the body instead.
The relatives of the victim were high in praise of the MCU and the Guyana Police Force for their progress thus far and are optimistic that the guilty will be prosecuted. Meanwhile, the crime chief has cautioned that the investigation is still active.
