… New champions to be crowned

By Ras Wadada
THE long-awaited and much-maligned Season Two of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/Stag Elite League will eventually kick off this coming Sunday at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground albeit minus the top two teams of the inaugural season as well as two others.
After over two months of tolerance, exercised by the governing body while being guided by CONCACAF and FIFA, the demands of four aggrieved clubs for arbitration to settle their grievances have been turned down.
The clubs, GFC, Pele FC, runners-up Alpha United and champions Slingerz FC, have all written to the GFF signalling their withdrawals from the season two and with them go the top Elite players of the first season.
The original four of Conquerors FC, GDF, Buxton United and Monedderlust FC will be joined by newcomers Victoria Kings of East Coast and from the mining town of Linden, Topp XX FC in quest of the top prize worth $6M.
The runners-up will carry away $3M, 3rd placers $2M and fourth-placers $1M. In addition there will be a KO competition among the top four teams at the end of round one of the two-round League.
The winners will earn $1.5M and the runners-up $700 000. Third- and fourth-placers will pocket $500 000 and $300 000 respectively.
City-based teams Fruta Conquerors and the Army must be among the top three contenders, along with Topp XX, a side with rich football pedigree and success. The bottom tier will be just as exciting and evenly contested among the teams from the Eastern coastline: Kings, Buxton and Monedderlust. No doubt they will provide stern opposition and surprises for the top half.
An explosion of new talent will be off-loaded with their eyes on the League’s valuable MVP award of one Honda XR 150cc, compliments of Marics Honda.
The biggest prize is the coveted championship of Guyana’s top flight football and with fans being gifted a 50 percent reduction to admission, their support can be pivotal in determining the final outcome.
The GFF has informed that a double-header and a march past of the teams will highlight Sunday’s opening of the season. Victoria Kings will begin their campaign against the GDF and Fruta Conquerors will confront Linden’s Topp XX in the matches set for the kick-off.
Never has there been such a level playing field among the contenders where anyone of the Elite Super Six can be crowned champions. What is certain is that new champions will be crowned since the doors have been closed on the disgruntled four and the way is now clear for the ‘Beautiful Game’ to unfold.
