AROUND 2 pm on Friday, two motorcycle bandits held up the staff of VISCOM Electronics at the store’s Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) branch and carted off a quantity of electronic devices.According to the store’s owners, one of the men was armed with a “chopper” while the other carried a gun. The items are estimated at $3M and included several high-end smartphones, digital cameras, tablets and other devices. No one was injured.
Still pictures showed the two men hopping off a motorcycle, entering the store with the helmets on and retrieving handsets and other devices from the display windows of the store. The incident lasted a mere 10 minutes and staff alerted the public by pressing a panic button, however by then the bandits had escaped.
After the robbery, the bandits headed west. The police responded soon after.
There has been a spate of robberies around the country in recent months. In response, the government said on Friday that it has received information on a potential domestic security threat and this has resulted in additional security measures at targeted areas. The operations will commence today.
These operations will be conducted by the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
