DHANRAJ Ramlal, called “Boxer”, a 71-year-old pensioner of Lot “R” Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara, was killed on Friday when motorcycle CH4141 crashed into him as he was crossing the Blankenburg public road. The motorcyclist, now in police custody, has been identified as 20-year-old Shamshudeen Hannie Mei of 1702 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo.
Police say the motorcyclist was proceeding at a fast rate west along the southern side of the road when, at about 9:00hrs, he crashed into the pedestrian, who was walking across the road. They both fell onto the roadway; and the motorcyclist was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was treated, whilst the pedestrian was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital in an unconscious condition, from where he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at about 11:00hrs.
Medical sources disclosed that a fractured rib punctured the pensioner’s lung. An autopsy is, however, expected to be performed on his body at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour on Monday.
Ramlall, a father of three and a former contractor, has been described by relatives as an easygoing individual. “He usually goes over the road to talk with this lady (whom) he knows, or sometimes he goes to the shop,” one relative noted.
