Michael Parris wanted to carry Guyana flag at Rio

Dear Editor,

ON FRIDAY, October 14, 2016, I happened to be conducting some business at the Bourda Market when the vendor said to me that she would signal a taxi driver she usually uses to ferry me and the bulk of my load.As I turned around to see the approaching driver, I asked her if that was the driver, and she said yes. I smiled and said to myself, ‘the gods must be crazy.’ As the driver pulled off, I looked at him and said, Olympian Parris? His response was in the affirmative. I went to work immediately and told him that a section of the media was demanding the current president of the Guyana Olympic Association and his establishment vacate office because of Guyana’s failure to secure a medal at the just-concluded Rio 2016 Olympic Games and what his opinion was.

As a reminder, this started the saga which led to other areas in question. Olympian Michael Parris’s words to me were that he totally objects to anyone who is making such a claim, and the situation in question is beyond the GOA. He further said that so many things need to get fixed, and we have to work together as a team. He also said he had expected he would have been asked to accompany Team Guyana to Rio and possibly be the flag-bearer because he is to date the only Guyanese to secure a medal.

I couldn’t take the conversation further because I am totally ignorant of the process, but perhaps GOA can take it from here.
Yours faithfully
TREVOR PEMBERTON
