Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo has called for the strengthening and deepening of bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Spain.Speaking at a celebration in observance of Spain’s National Day — Fiesta Nacional de Espana — held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) on Friday, the Prime Minister said Guyana’s relations with Spain dates back to October 12, 1979.

“As you may be aware, Excellency, the Government of Guyana is keen on advancing economic diplomacy; and in this vein, we seek to engage friendly countries and our development partners…,” he said.

The Prime Minister said Spain has played a meaningful role in its efforts to “contribute significantly to our national well-being”, particularly in the areas of training and rice project funding.

In expressing gratitude to the Kingdom of Spain on behalf of the administration, Prime Minister Nagamootoo said Guyana looks forward to enhancing its cooperation with Spain in the areas of trade, foreign direct investment, and security, among other areas.

He called on Spain’s Honorary Consulate here to “boost these bilateral efforts”.

“The Government of Guyana looks forward to the conclusion of our proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation, the draft Agreement on Scientific and Technical Cooperation, and the Agreement for the Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments between Guyana and Spain; and to concluding the elimination of visas for diplomatic passports,” the Prime Minister added.

The Prime Minister has also reminded of the many issues on the international agenda that are relevant to Guyana’s national interest — those that drive the country’s commitment to addressing issues of economic cooperation; climate change (Paris Agreement); the promotion of peace, security, human rights; and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“I look forward to Spain’s continued support as well as (that of) our other international development partners, as Guyana stand resolutely against intimidation and bullies that aim to frustrate and stymie our national development, and threaten our territorial integrity,” he stated.

The Prime Minister said Guyana remains committed to the rule of law, international peace and security, and international co-operation among partnering states.
