THE People’s Progressive Party has begun its search for a replacement of Charles Ramson Jr. as he prepares to depart Guyana to take up a Chevening Scholarship offered by the British Government.Speaking at the party’s weekly press conference, General Secretary Clement Rohee confirmed that Ramson is expected to tender his resignation soon from the National Assembly.
“He will take a course in respect to his presence in the National Assembly that will see his seat being vacated and being replaced by another Member of Parliament,” said Rohee.
Ramson Jr has been in discussion with party officials about his scholarship and the impact it would have on his future as a politician. Given Ramson’s imminent departure to further his academics, several persons are being considered by the party as a possible replacement.
“The same process that was used to identify the 32 Members of Parliament (MPs) following the May 2015 elections, [is] the same criteria and assessment [that] will be employed in selecting the person,” said the General Secretary.
Rohee said that while the party will be affected by Ramson’s departure from the National Assembly, he will be replaced by “someone who is equally qualified or by someone who is just as effective in presenting a case and so forth, that’s why we are looking at more than one person,” he said.
Ramson Jr., who is an Attorney, is one of more than twenty young Guyanese who applied for and were granted the prestigious scholarship to complete his Masters at a University in the United Kingdom. He is expected to take up his scholarship in September.
