Cops say cocaine was in suitcase handles

FOUR DAYS after a 20-year-old woman was busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) with cocaine in her suitcase handles she was on Monday charged for trafficking the illicit drug.Jenny-Ann Crawford of Phase 1, East Ruimveldt Squatting Area, was taken before City Magistrate Leron Daley for having 410 grams of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Crawford denied the charge, while her attorney, Ucie Anderson asked for the woman to be released on bail since she suffered from a mental illness.

According to Anderson, Crawford was forced to drop-out of school and could not attaint a job because of her ailment. The lawyer further disclosed that the cocaine was allegedly placed by a close friend of the woman who had provided the suitcase as a token.

“It was not visible to anyone packing the suitcase because the person hid it in the handles,” the lawyer pointed out to the court.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Kevin London contended that Crawford fully understood why she was being charged and that the woman’s ailment did not prohibit her from dealing with the drug.

Magistrate Daley ruled in the prosecution’s favor and remanded Crawford until September 13.
