BORN and raised at Maria Johanna, Suzette Ferguson is a senior teacher at The Essequibo Islands Secondary School, located on Wakenaam island. She joined the teaching profession in 1992, and soon after enrolled at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), where she was formally trained as a teacher.

Upon graduation from CPCE, Ferguson moved across to the University of Guyana (UG), where she successfully read for a degree in History. Now teaching History at Essequibo Islands Secondary School, she told the Guyana Chronicle that she loves working with children.

This young teacher related that while she loves the profession, teaching can become a challenge, especially when having to deal with undisciplined students.

Ferguson has a passion for reading and writing, likes surfing the Internet, and follows cricket very closely. She is currently writing an adventure novel based on her travels throughout Guyana, and is hoping she would have enough discipline to complete the work.

When this teacher is not in the classroom, reading or following a cricket match, she is busy helping underprivileged children to complete their school-based assessments (SBAs), or volunteering her services at the Give Another Chance Foundation, a non-governmental organisation on the island.

“I believe that every young person who has fallen down because of a mistake they made should be given a second chance in life; and young people must take their education seriously. Education is the key to success; it is vital for opening the door for a brighter future,” she told the Guyana Chronicle.
