Woman miner charged

–for not paying employee’s wages

AFTER approximately two years of evading the police, Elizabeth Ann Hendricks, a gold miner, was arrested and placed before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. She was wanted by the police since 2014 after reportedly refusing to pay one of her employees $300,000. According to reports, Petal Heyligar had laboured for Hendricks in Issano in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni District but when it was time to effect payment, the gold miner had refused.

A report was filed at the Labour Department in 2014 and an arrest warrant was subsequently issued after the matter had engaged the attention of the police but Hendricks, though owning and operating a shop in Issano, had managed to elude the police up until this week.

The gold miner, who lives at Lot 55 Lime Street, Werk-en-Rust, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Wednesday, and is expected to return to court on July 26 for decision.

Guyana Chronicle was told that if Hendricks is unable or unwilling to pay the monies owed, she could be sentenced to prison.
