RESIDENTS of Lichfield, West Coast Berbice want the streets in their village repaired and upgraded. They are also clamouring for flood relief following their heavy losses in crops and livestock during the May/June rains. According to a spokesperson for the villages, the streets currently being used was built some 12 years ago, and due to lack of maintenance, it has deteriorated over the years.

“There are numerous potholes in these streets, some of them can only be traversed on foot since vehicles get bogged down or even damaged,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the Mahaica, Mahaicony, Abary/ Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) has installed a pump in the village and water has receded in both residential and agricultural areas.

However, no one in authority had visited the village to determine how residents had been affected and what forms of relief they could benefit from.

The spokesperson said villagers are eagerly awaiting such a visit from Government officials to know when repairs would be effected on the streets, when the clogged-up drains would be de-silted, and what action will be taken to improve the quality of life in the village.

“These residents are not the types to block streets and disrupt traffic but we need urgent attention to the issues affecting us,” the spokeswoman who chose anonymity said.
