The Education Ministry and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) are still at the negotiating table trying to resolve the issue surrounding the proposed relocation of students and teachers of the Brickdam Secondary School.

Teachers and parents flocked outside the dilapidated building Wednesday morning as they refuse to adhere to the Ministry’s decision to relocate to different secondary school across Georgetown until a permanent solution is found.

“We just want all of the children to go together, if they got to move, we don’t have a problem but we don’t want them splitting up,” Mary Permaul  told Guyana Chronicle as she stood outside of the school with her daughter who is currently in grade seven.

Permaul was among many parents who refused to collect letters of relocation which were being distributed at the school this morning. “I am not collecting any letter until all of the students and teachers are placed at the same location,” she lamented.

On Tuesday, Chief Education Minister Olatto Sam announced that the Brickdam Secondary School is no more and as such both teachers and students will be placed at schools nearest to their homes until a permanent solution is found – hopefully at the start of the new academic year.

But the teachers, who later muster the support of the parents and teachers, rejected the proposal saying that a single location should be used.

The entire issue erupted on Monday when the more than 28 teachers attached to the school protested against the poor state of the building.

Education Minister Rupert Roopnaraine is expected to address the media later today on the developing issue. Stay connected to Guyana Chronicle online for more information.
