CITY HALL is requesting businesses that utilise generators in the City to observe all protocols and regulations pertaining to the use of this piece of equipment. In a press release, Town Clerk Royston King expressed concern at the increasing number of persons operating generators within the capital’s central commercial hub.
According to King, it has been observed that some persons who utilise generators are storing them under canopies or overhead sheds, some of which are above public pavements and walkways.
The Town Clerk has said: “Not only is this practice against fire regulations, City by-laws and environmental standards, but it is also dangerous to life and limb.”
He said the Council has “statutory obligation to ensure the health and safety of every citizen, and the following action goes against this.”
Persons wishing to operate or utilise generators within the City must seek professional information from the relevant authorities, which would include the City Engineer’s Department and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for environmental guidance.
“Apart from the danger posed, these generators give off emissions that we are not certain of, and some of them leak oil that falls onto our pavements. So we are calling on those involved to desist from operating those generators without observing the regulations in place. Failure to do so will result in the Town Clerk and his team moving to enforce regulations pertaining to this matter,” the release concluded.
