A 17-YEAR-OLD who was confirmed brain dead days after she had given birth to a 28-week-old (premature) baby was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) on Friday.A hospital source said the teen, who had been brain dead for about three days, succumbed despite the efforts of doctors to save her.

The source indicated that from the onset the chances of the teen surviving were very slim, mainly because she was born with an illness known as Brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), which is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain.

It was reported that the pregnant teen would constantly vomit. She experienced a stroke on the right side of her body 28 weeks into the pregnancy, and a decision was made to do an emergency Cesarean Section (C-Section) with the intention of saving the unborn child. The Guyana Chronicle understands that the baby also died at the GPHC, on Wednesday, May 18.
