IN the wake of his sacking as bowling consultant on the West Indies team, Sir Curtly Ambrose said he never felt like he was doing a bad job during his three-year stint.Coach Phil Simmons, in explaining replacing Ambrose with Roddy Estwick, said he needed someone who was more “technical” to work with the bowlers.
But Ambrose said no one ever complained that he was not doing a good job.
“We spoke a lot about bowling and no one has ever complained to me about not doing a good enough job,” Ambrose said.
“I gave them my opinion, my ideas, my views, and they would say they agree with it or they don’t agree, so we had a very good working relationship and that is what makes my job a little easier. If they complain, it’s not to me.”
Ambrose believes many of the players have weaknesses that ought to have been addressed before they got into the team. He said professionals should not have people holding their hands at the highest level.
“If you have technical issues, then you shouldn’t be in the team and I could be wrong but that’s the way I look at it,” he reasoned.
“At the international level is where you are looking to get results. If a guy happens to lose his action or struggle with his run-up a little bit, which can happen, those are easy things to iron out. But if you have a serious technical issue, there is no way you can rectify that in one or two days in the nets. It’s almost impossible.” (Sportsmax.com)
