THE petite but determined Shamice Narine has broken into the “men’s club” and is now the technician/technical administrator at Starr Computers on Brickdam.Believe it or not, she can build a computer from scratch and she chose that career because she knew what she wanted from an early age and worked towards it. Consequently, she enjoys a great deal of workplace satisfaction, performing in a job in which she has become accomplished over the past three years.
Shamice is an upbeat young woman whose dream was to become a technician and this has been realised through hard work and dedication. She told the Guyana Chronicle that at no time did she feel discouraged because she chose a career primarily dominated by men.
She now works side by side with five males but she is proficient enough to assemble and build a computer from scratch as well as handle repairs, loading software, logging and allocating repairs, doing admin reports, organising workstations and managing customer services.
Shamice said that there are a lot of misconceptions about ICT, one being it is a man’s job, but this is not so since she feels quite comfortable in her line of work. She describes her job satisfaction as an ‘adrenalin rush’ and picked such a career because it is the fastest-changing industry in the world with ICT in every industry.
Shanice is an only child and hails from West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme; she thanked her parents for supporting her so much that she has become an “all-rounder” in her field. She likes interacting with customers and lending support as a team player at Starr Computers which has about 22 employees and a branch in Miami, United States.
She strives to become better every day by spending time researching, so as to develop herself.
