THE Legal Affairs Committee of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is working on crafting a code of ethics, according to Public Relations Officer (ag) Debra LewisThe members of the Legal Affairs Committee are Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan, and Councillors Bishram Kuppen, Andrea Marks, Selima Bacchus- Hinds, Welton Clarke, Carlyle Goring and Yvonne Ferguson.
Lewis said the proposed document, which could guide professional behaviour at City Hall, will be presented to full Council for perusal and debate.
Town Clerk Royston King said that this is the first time in the history of the municipality that such a document would be crafted by councillors. The crafting of a code of ethics is in keeping with internationally accepted standards.
It is the norm for professional bodies to set guidelines that would help them strive for excellence. Town Clerk King noted that the purpose of the code is to provide guidance and set common ethical standards to be adhered to on a consistent basis.
It is anticipated that the Code of Ethics would govern the actions, working relationships and set a standard of excellence for councillors.
The officer corps of the council will craft a similar document for senior officers.
