THE University of Guyana team produced an impressive performance last weekend in Jamaica at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Invitational at the Usain Bolt Track and Field facility at Mona Campus.Cleveland Forde dominated the 1500m class with a time of 4:16.93, dusting his second-placed team-mate and countryman Dane Johnson who finished 16 seconds off the pace.
Third place went to Ovell Burton while fourth was picked up by Guyanese Salim Yusuf.
On the field, Emanuel Archibald produced personal-best (PB) jump of 14.73 metres for the gold medal in the triple-jump class before picking up third place in the long jump with 7.20 metres.
Team manager and UG sport coordinator Lavern Fraser-Thomas said, “I am very pleased with the performance of all the members of the team, Especially Emanuel Archibald who achieved his PB in both jumping events.”
“The potential of student athletes of the University of Guyana was on full display especially considering that their peers are all athletes of specific programmes.”
Another highlight of the meet was a seminar where presentations were made by various lecturers including Dr. Klaus Werner Wolf, a senior lecturer at the Electron Microscopy Unit: Faculty of Science & Technology. He spoke of the musculoskeletal role in an athlete’s life.
Dr Paula Dawson was the second presenter and showcased her knowledge and expertise on the cause and prevention of some of the more common injuries incurred by athletes.
Another presenter, chiropractor Dr Neil Gardner, highlighted his profession’s role in sports and how necessary is the need for the interrelating of all three. (Stephan Sookram)
