ANTIGUA, Barbados, Guadeloupe and Martinique emerged winners on match-day two of the Scotiabank CFU Caribbean Cup on Wednesday night. Guadeloupe however, required penalties after they played to a draw against their opponents.
In Group 1, Antigua and Barbuda defeated Aruba 2-1 at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in North Sound.
Joshua Parker opened the scoring for the hosts in the fourth minute of play. The Benna Boys doubled the lead in the 23rd minute courtesy of goal from Adriel George.
Aruba found the score sheet in the 28th minute with a strike from Fredrick Gomez but were unable to find the net for the remainder of the tame encounter.
Meanwhile, Martinique blanked the British Virgin Islands 3-0 in Group 7 action at the Stade Pierre Aliker.
Kevin Parsemain opened the scoring in the 12th but the home team had to wait until the 68th minute before Yuan Aquino made it 2-0. Steven Lange scored Martinique’s third in the 84th minute to round off an emphatic victory.
Over in Barbados, the home team edged Curacao at the Usain Bolt Stadium in Bridgetown in Group 4 play. Romario Harewood scored the lone goal in the 69th minute to seal the win.
Guadeloupe and Suriname’s Group 6 match at Stade Renee Serge Nabajoth Les Abymes in Guadeloupewas the first game in the tournament to go down to penalty kicks after both teams battled to a 0-0 draw. Guadeloupe, however, grabbed the 3 points by edging Suriname 3-2 on penalties.
Round one matches resume tomorrow when Aruba host St Kitts and Nevis in Group 1; St Maarten host USVI in Group 2; French Guiana travel to Bermuda in Group 3 action; Curacao are at home to the Dominican Republic in Group 4; Anguilla host Puerto Rico Group 5 and British Virgin Islands entertain Dominica Group 7.
