AMID screams and cheers, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) athletics club were declared the inaugural winners of the North Georgetown 50th Anniversary Track Meet which went down on Sunday at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.With home-ground advantage the GPF amassed 313 points to take the first place trophy. Following behind were Mercury Fast Laners (MFL) Athletics Club with 264 points. Super Upcoming Runners (SUR) came in for third with 196 points, Buxton were fourth with 168 points.
The Bartica team and Ruralites tied for fifth with 67 points, while Team Uzzi walked away with 63 points.
Police’s Jevina Sampson shared the prize for Best Under-20 female with SUR’s Tiranna Mitchell, while Linton Mentis copped the top spot in the Boys’ Under-20 category. Ruralites’ D. Morrison and Buxton’s Maurice Barnes shared the Boys’ Under-18 category win, and Police’s Kezra Murray won the title on the distaff end.
MFL’s Tiffauna Garnett won the Girls’ Under-16 and SUR’s Ronaldo Gobin won the Boys’ Under-16.
Police athletes also dominated in the Under-14 category where Kerron Clarke picked up the prize for the Boys and Odessa France shared the Girls’ title with PFL’s Princess Brown.
The day saw Police and MFL athletes go head-to-head. CARIFTA Games athlete Jevina Sampson, ahead of her participation in the Games next weekend, clocked 1:00.50s in the 400m and 2:23.40s in the 800m.
Meanwhile, in the Under-18, Murray won the 400m in a time of 1:01.10s, and took the 800m in a time of 2;29.40s. Garnett dominated for MFL in the Under-16, where she picked up the win in the 100m (12.80s), 200m (23.00s) and 400m (1:03.08s).
Mitchell copped the Girls’ Under-20 sprint double with a 12.50s finish in the 100m while clocking 25.60s in the 200m.
Linton Mentis with a time of 10.90s won the Boys’ Under-20 100m. .He followed up with a win of the 200m in a time of 22.10s.
Morrison triumphed in the 100m and 200m of the Boys’ Under-17, while Barnes took the 400m (54.30s) and 800m (2:10.30s) of the category.
