Today is World Kidney Day

WORLD KIDNEY will be observed today under the theme,”Kidney Disease and Children – Act Early to Prevent It” and the Kidney Foundation of Guyana will be observing the occasion with a live discussion programme this evening on NCN from 9:00 pm with two persons living with chronic kidney disease. The Kidney Foundation of Guyana was launched on World Kidney Day 2011, and has as its mission: to promote public awareness of prevention, treatment and the consequences of kidney and urinary tract infections; to support national health-care efforts at reducing obesity, diabetes, hypertension and kidney failure; and to encourage partnerships that mobilise financial and other resources to assist individuals who suffer from, or are susceptible to these diseases.
World Kidney Day aims at raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of Kidney Disease and its associated health problems worldwide. In a statement the foundation said this year’s theme is encouraging “us not to wait until it is too late. Act now before it is too late.” According to the Foundation the kidneys main job is to remove toxins and excess water from the blood. They help to control Blood Pressure, to produce red blood cells and keep bones healthy. They also control levels of minerals and molecules, including sodium and potassium and help control how acid our blood is. Everyday our kidneys carefully control salt and water in our body so that our Blood Pressure remains the same.
