THE National Sports Commission (NSC) has extended the date of submissions for nominations for the 2016 National Sports Awards, according to Sport Director Christopher Jones.
The annual awards, handed out to the best athletes, sports teams, officials and journalists will this year coincide with the 50th Anniversary celebrations in the month of May.
However, Jones has lamented the fact that some sports associations have failed to submit their nominations but has offered a second chance to those ‘delinquent’ associations.
“The deadline for the submission of nominations for sport awards was February 29. On to this morning (Thursday) we received a nomination. A lot of the associations are in fact in default. They have not made their submissions,” said Jones.
“To-date we have 11 submissions that were made,” Jones pointed out, adding, “We have extended the deadline for some of the associations that have not made their submissions, by another fortnight. Once we pass that deadline, we will begin the process of identifying those persons who will actually be awarded.”
Meanwhile the venue seems likely to remain the National Cultural Centre and according to Jones, the facility will be filled to capacity.
Plans are also progressing nicely for the introduction of the new format of a ‘Grammy-style’ ceremony on the night of the event.
The day of the awards is essentially when the athletes will know whether or not he or she was successful. They would not get any pre-empted information, Jones had told Chronicle Sport late last year.
