Pedal cyclist thanks his lucky stars he’s still alive

By Shirley Thomas

A FORTY-ONE-year-old pedal cyclist is currently in the Male Surgical Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) nursing a broken leg, after being run over by a truck early Friday morning.
Samuel Thomas, who lives in Diamond, was riding along Main Street on his way to work around 07:30hrs that day, when, as he was about to cross Holmes Street, a heavy-duty truck came from behind and knocked him to the ground. As he lay there, winded, he said, all he felt was the left front wheel of the truck running over his right leg.
Luckily for him, he said, in spite of the excruciating pain in his leg, he was still able to manoeuvre himself out of harm’s way before the left rear wheel could finish the job.
He was also able to make out that the man at the wheel of the truck worked with a popular businessman, who is also an acquaintance of his employers.
But, fat lot knowing all that did him, as all the man did was get out of the truck and plead with him to accept his apology and not press charges. And that, as they say, was the end of that!
Now he spends his days lying on a hospital bed awash in pain, a fixator attached to his leg.
But in spite of all this, the one thing he is grateful for is that the truck was not fetching any cargo on the day of the accident, or he might have died.
He’s also at a loss to know how he could have come to such a pass, after using the same route to get to work for going on 20 years without incident.
Insisting that the driver had to have seen him approaching the corner, and should have slowed down, the obviously overwrought Thomas burst into tears and said, “I thank God that I still alive, and I asking Him to save meh leg. He is in charge; and all is well.”
He is expected to return to the theatre soon, when he will know what his chances are where his injury is concerned.
