Teenager remanded on ganja charge

A teenager was on Monday remanded to prison on a narcotic charge after he was allegedly caught at the City Magistrate’s Court attempting to traffick marijuana to a prisoner in the lockup.

The 17 – year – old Georgetown resident pleaded not guilty to the charge of illegal possession of cannabis during his appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

It is alleged that on February 26, at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, he had in his possession 154 and a half gramms of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

His lawyer, Mark Conway requested that the young man be released on reasonable bail on the grounds that he has an unblemished record and the fact that he has to attend school since he has to study for his CSEC examination later this year.

However, Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones objected to bail on the grounds that the lawyer failed to raise any special reason for his client to be granted his pre-trail liberty.

According to the prosecutor, on the day in question, the teenager arrived at the court’s lockup under the pretense that he had brought meals for Dellon Henry called ‘Nasty Man,’ who is on remand for murder and gun possession.

Police Constable Sinclair checked the bag which the defendant had brought with three bottles inside, when he noticed that two of the bottles contained leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

It is alleged that the young man ran out of the court before he could have been apprehended. Officers gave chase and caught the young man in the vicinity of Parliament buildings along Brickdam.

Bail was denied and he was remanded to prison until March 14 where he will be placed in the custody of a probation officer.
