ATTORNEY at Law and former Magistrate, Gordon Gilhuys was on Tuesday morning arrested by Inspector Chubinaught Singh at the Mackenzie Police Station and later placed on $10,000 station bail on a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. It was alleged that Gilhuys attempted to pervert the course of justice by approaching a female officer attached to the Mackenzie Police Station in an effort to persuade her to accept another statement from a victim involved in a rape matter.
Attorney Gilhuys, whose client is the defendant in the matter, was charged for raping a 16-year-old girl. According to E’ Division Commander Calvin Brutus, the victim and her mother had already given a statement and Gilhuys had allegedly attempted to have the rank accept another statement, positing that they wished to settle the matter with the defendant outside of the law.
It was reported that Gilhuys allegedly had a verbal confrontation with the rank in question, which led to his arrest. The commander said this tactic is used to lay a foundation of complaint in the court of law and has described the situation as very unhealthy for a legal practitioner.
The file will be compiled and sent the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, where recommendations for charges will be instituted. Gilhuys is a former police officer and a magistrate.
