ALEX Bunbury made one step closer to releasing his dream of setting up a Sports and Academics Academy in Guyana, following his meeting with Minister of State Joseph Harmon yesterday at the Ministry of the Presidency. Canada’s Hall of Fame inductee, along with his business partners, visited Harmon to have his first interaction with the Government of Guyana since arriving last week – his primary reason being to set up the ‘Alex Bunbury Sports and Academics Academy’.
A release from the Ministry said that Harmon was receptive to the proposal aimed at balancing sports and academics in Guyana.
The team presented the ‘Alex Bunbury’ vision of a Sports and Academics facility that is expected to be constructed in Guyana.
It is estimated that this facility, if given the green light will initially require 20 acres of land, but the total needed for the entire and completed facility is 220 acres.
The Government of Guyana is expected to have more consultations and meetings with the team and, according to the Ministry of the Presidency, the aim is to fulfil the administration’s mandate and policy that all such projects must be beneficial to, and serve the people of Guyana.
Meanwhile, Bunbury, in an interview with Chronicle Sport, said that he’s satisfied with the outcome of yesterday’s meeting and thanked Minister Harmon for engaging his group.
“It was fantastic and we’re very happy with how things are going so far. He (Harmon) was very pleased at how we’re going about it and so now, it’s a matter of how we proceed,” said the football great.
However, Bunbury said that the meeting was just an icebreaker, since much more work is still needed to be done.
Bunbury and his team are expected to meet with President David Granger before they depart Guyana on January 25; something the Guyanese/Canadian football legend says he’s highly anticipating.
“If all goes according to plan, we should get everything off the ground in another 12 months. I think we have done, so far, all that we had wanted to and I’m grateful,” said Bunbury.
