SEVERAL staff members from Digicel Guyana paid a visit to the Mahaica Children’s Home to deliver school packs and grocery items for the girls who are living there.Digicel, in November 2013, handed over the newly constructed Mahaica Children’s Home after completing works. The initial works started out as refurbishing plans, but turned out to be the building of a completely new multi-million-dollar structure.
Reconstruction started in July 2012, and the home was handed over in late November of 2013. The home houses children who come from abusive dwellings or have been displaced for one reason or another with no place to go.
With the blessings of Digicel Chairman Denis O’Brien, the company worked along with Marcel Gaskin and Associates, who came up with the design and layouts; Patterson and Associates, who did quantity surveying; and R&D Engineering.
Facilities in the home include two dorms, bathrooms, a sick bay, a study room, a recreation room, kitchen, laundry room, water filtration and tanks.
Digicel has made it a priority to keep the Mahaica Children’s Home close to its heart. “The wellbeing of the girls is a major focus for us, and we make it our duty to visit them and find out what their needs are. We intend to keep doing this as long as there is a need for us to do so,” noted Digicel Head of Marketing, Jacqueline James.
The school items will see every school-age girl in the home attending the new school term fully equipped, and the food items will assist in the provision of three hot, healthy meals a day for the girls.
House Services Supervisor Pearline Cummings thanked the cell phone company for its generous donation, and said she would ensure that every child in the home benefits from the donation.
