Gayle’s Epic Fail

Jamaican cricketer Chris Gayle made himself a trending topic for simply asking a woman out. Seems harmless, but Gayle commented on a female reporter’s eyes and asked her out for drinks, in the middle of her interview on national television in Australia. Talk about inappropriate timing. To add insult to injury, the cocky sportsman told the young professional “don’t blush, baby” as she tried to brush it off and move on with her work. The interview has since gone viral and Gayle came under fire for his sleazy move. He was fined US$7,200 by the team he represented and was labeled as sexist for seeming to think that it is okay to impose his charm on a woman at literally any time.
Gayle was made to apologise publicly and called it a “joke” and “simple comment”, stating that he didn’t mean to offend the woman. Call me crazy, but I wouldn’t exactly blame Gayle- though his ego plays a major part in the move- but this speaks to the lack of respect that women are given in “male” professions even today. You’d think that in 2016, we wouldn’t still be experiencing these things. Whether Gayle was serious or not, however, public feminist consensus is that this qualifies as harrassment, and as Gayle learned, he’s no longer in the Caribbean where such aggressiveness is seen as just part of the flirting culture. Honestly, though, I bet the appeal of that reporter must have skyrocketed back in Australia. Being asked out on public television by a major sports personality? Epic.

Radio Rebels
The public waits with bated breath on a decision as to whether all Jagdeo-issued radio licenses will be revoked as was recently reported. The Guyana National Broadcasting Authority has said that while there have been discussions in that regard, a final decision has not yet been made. Of course, skeptics like Ruel Johnson and Javin Singh believe that this may very well be a bluff, as Jagdeo continues to enjoy apparent immunity from his wrongdoings, yet many are hoping that it’s true so as to allow other – perhaps more eligible- parties who would have previously been denied such license a chance at achieving them this time around. But this also means that if this is true, goodbye to Hits & Jams Radio- which we all know is a country favourite, at least among the younger generation. Looks like Robert Persaud – who was also among those issued licenses by Jagdeo, chose the right time to sell out and gain his profits. Maybe he heard the word through the grapevine.
