THE WORKS Services Group (WSG) has commenced a review of the Sheriff Street-Mandela Avenue Project, and upon completion of the exercise, the findings will be discussed with Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, before being sent to Cabinet for approval. This is according to WSG Coordinator Geoffrey Vaughn. He made the announcement during the Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s recent end-of-year press briefing at the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on High Street, Kingston.

The road covers a length of some seven kilometres, and the contract is to the tune of US$24M. In July last, the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board received five bids for the roadway expansion and enhancement of the Sheriff Street– Mandela Avenue network.
The engineer’s estimate was US$36,377,564 (see list of bidders provided)

The government has received a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank to fund the Sheriff Street- Mandela Avenue Roadway Enhancement project. The scope of works for the Sheriff Street into Mandela Avenue road corridor includes asphaltic pavement, road safety, upgrading traffic intersection signals at each of the major road junctions, and traffic and drainage improvement works. There will also be structural works to bridges, culverts and other supporting infrastructure. Pavement works will include the construction of a two-lane roadway with a median partitioning the two lanes along Sheriff Street.

The first section of Mandela Avenue will involve expansion from a two-lane to a four-lane roadway with a median in the centre, while the second section will consist of three lanes.
The total distance of roadway to be rehabilitated/constructed is 7km and would involve road-widening, reconstruction of failed sections, and asphalt overlay.
