Another fined for dangerous driving

A MAN was on Friday fined for dangerous driving when he appeared before Providence Magistrate Alex Moore.Winston Mitchel allegedly slammed into one of President David Granger’s escort cars last Thursday, injuring two police officers. He pleaded guilty to two traffic-related charges stemming from the incident which occurred at Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

It is alleged that Mitchel, while driving his motor car along the Friendship Public Road, failed to stop and give the right away when he heard the sirens approaching. Because of his failure to adhere to the law, he crashed into the escort car, injuring two police officers in the process.

According to Mitchel, he was on his way to the airport with his father, and did not hear the sirens, but saw when one of them attempted to direct him to the curb. He failed to see the oncoming cars.

“I tried to prevent an accident and caused another accident. Ah sorry, My Honour,” Mitchel told the court.

Magistrate Moore scolded Mitchel about his recklessness, advising that he could have caused serious injury to the country’s leader, other road users and the lawmen.

Mitchel has to pay $30,000 in compensation to each of the injured officers; and this has to be done on or before January 15 if he is to avoid serving a custodial sentence.
