GERON `The Lone Soldier’ Williams pedalled away with the top prize of the Alonzo Greaves `Birth Anniversary’ 30-lap cycle race which was staged in the National Park yesterday. The organisers Roraima Bikers Club which staged the event did not record the winner’s time, however, Williams was declared the winner of the 30-lap event that was staged around the inner circuit of the National Park.
The event attracted just about 25 starters and after four laps of the event were completed, Geron Williams, Marlon `Fishy’ Williams, Orville Hinds, Raul Leal, and birth anniversary boy Alonzo Greaves broke from the leading pack and opened a sizeable lead.
With 15 of the 30 laps remaining, the two Williams riders (Geron) of Continental Cycle Club and `Fishy’ of Team Gillette Evolution made a break and was never caught again as no other cyclists seemed interested of placing among the top three.
With approximately 300 metres remaining, `Fishy’ Williams attacked but was pursued by Geron `The Lone Soldier’ Williams who did well to overtake `Fishy’ Williams with about 100 metres to go and went on to win by approximately the width of a tyre.
`Birth anniversary boy’ Alonzo Greaves had to settle for third place.
Of the 30 prime prizes that were up for grabs with $2000 for each of the laps for the winner of each prime, second-place finisher `Fishy’ Williams of Team Gillette Evolution won 13, while Geron `The lone Soldier’ Williams won seven.
Two each were won by Team Gillette Evolution’s Orville Hinds and Leal, while Greaves won three and team Alanis’ Paul DeNobrega won one.
The race was organised by the Roraima Bikers Cycle Club of which Greaves is a member.
Greaves promised that the event would be an annual affair.
