Child rapist put away for 18 years

City businessman Kevin Jordan will spend the next 18 years behind bars after being convicted yesterday of the offence of buggery. The sentence was originally 20 years but because of a favourable probation report Justice Dawn Gregory deducted two years from the sentence handed down. The judge said it was a sexual offence involving a child and the sentence was to protect the public from harm. The probation report highlighted his favourable character exhibited in his generosity and free-handed nature.
Justice Gregory told the packed court room that because of the age of the child and the circumstantial evidence put forward by the state, she wanted to hand down the 20-year maximum sentence but the report influenced the final decision.
After the sentence was handed down several relatives of Jordan began crying and one person said out aloud: “Bear up, don’t give up” as the seemingly bewildered man was led out the court room. Another woman however, stood in the court room and began crying openly saying; “The justice system is a failed one.”
The probation report said Jordan, 56, of Lot 16 Broad and Charles Street was charged for buggery. He is the second of 10 siblings and had three wives with whom he had several children.
It stated that in 1992 he opened a spare parts business at Broad and Charles Street and was a family-oriented man. It said Jordan distributed kites and hampers to residents in the community and was deemed a very generous man
The accused denied the charge in the proceedings, saying he never touched or had anal sex with boy or girl.
On October 12, 2015 Kevin Jordan was found guilty by a 12-member High Court jury of one of two counts of raping the seven-year-old boy.
Jordan, the owner of Jordan’s Spare Parts store, was previously arrested in 2007 after four boys, between the ages of six and eight years old, alleged that he had molested them at his business place. The boys were students of a nearby primary school. The trial was heard in camera.
