‘Just a joint’ brings man 20 hours community service, $3,000 fine

CITY Magistrate Annette Singh yesterday ordered Keron Barrette of 34 East La Penitence to do 20 hours of community service and fined him $3,000 for being in possession of two grammes of marijuana on Thursday near Bourda Market, Georgetown.Barrette, who was unrepresented by an attorney, pleaded guilty to the charge. The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question the police were informed about suspicious activities by the market.

A police rank subsequently approached Barrette and a search revealed a bulky paper packet in his pocket. It was opened in his presence and the leaves, stems and seeds suspected to be marijuana were found. He was informed of the allegation of being in possession of the illegal substance and he responded that “it just a joint.” He was then arrested and charged. (Sherah Alleyne)
