THE Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) and beverage giant Banks DIH officially launched the 2015-2016 rugby season with the Banks Beer Rugby Sevens tournament in the boardroom of Banks DIH. This tournament is one that has been stable in the union’s calendar for years and will kick off at 11:00hrs at the University of Guyana (UG) rugby field tomorrow.
Banks Beer Brand manager Brian Choo Hen disclosed in his brief remarks that his company is quite pleased to be associated with the union and over the years has seen its investment become fruitful.
He added, “We expect to see the fans of rugby there, it is free. Banks Beer remains committed towards the development of rugby in Guyana and we have seen over the years that indeed rugby has developed our boys and they have gone places and brought home titles to our dear country Guyana.”
The tournament will involve the defending champions UG Wolves, Police Sports Club (PSC), GDF, Pepsi Hornets and Yamaha Caribs.
The ladies side of the tournament will see over 35 ladies matching skills against another team made up of players from all the clubs and national rugby sides.
GRFU president Peter Green said the players have shaken off the competition rust and will be ready to entertain in the official season opener.
Green said, “This weekend’s tournament will highlight the skills of the new generation coming up because the federation will be moving forward to rebuild the 15′ and 7s teams. With that in mind, it’s very good Banks has renewed the sponsorship annually with us and I commend them for that.”
Last weekend at the same venue, a young and energetic UG Wolves team dethroned GDF to cart off the Trophy Stall Sevens Championship title.
