Sanjay’s owner gets bail –after appealing causing-death conviction

BISHNARINE Persaud, proprietor of Sanjay’s Jewellery in the city, who was convicted last Friday and jailed for 58 months on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 yesterday morning in the High Court by Justice Bishnarine Roy.Persaud, 44, was yesterday represented by Attorney-at-law Glen Hanoman and he was expected to be released from the Camp Street jail by nightfall.

Last Friday Persaud was jailed after the sentence was handed down by Magistrate Judy Latchman, who refused the defendant’s bail application pending an appeal. Latchman in her ruling said she was convinced there was compelling evidence that Persaud was guilty of the offence.

Leon Hunte, 55, of Stone Avenue, Blygezight, who was a municipal handyman, was struck and killed by a sports car driven by the businessman. Particulars of the charge are that on September 10, 2014 at Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown, Persaud allegedly drove motor car PKK 5501 in a manner that was dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Hunte.
