SEVERAL female ranks of the Guyana Police Force are at present in the United Kingdom taking part in the annual International Association of Women Police Conference which got underway last Sunday and concludes on August 28th.The 24-strong group from Guyana is being led by Senior Superintendent Maxine Graham and includes ranks from various divisions and departments of the Guyana Police Force.
Guyana has been regularly attending this conference, which is being held at St. David Hall Cardiff in the UK. This year the Government of Guyana sponsored the full trip of Superintendent Desiree Fowler while the other women in the team would have raised funds for their travel and received some assistance from the force itself.
The conference is geared at building the capacity of police forces around the world through its female ranks. They are drawn from the Caribbean and other countries of the world.
Over the next few days they will be exposed to training in the areas of leadership, psychology, domestic violence, language and communication, women and terrorism, police community support, criminology, prosecution and investigation.
The ranks will also be engaged on such issues as public disorder, diversification and globalized crimes, convictions and imprisonment, negotiations, effective victim support, ethics, body cameras, sexual exploitation, globalization, dealing with loss of colleagues and stress.
In addition, the training will focus on working with partners, policing and young people, development through coaching and mentoring, healthy lifestyle, achieving job success and other topical areas.
Upon their return to Guyana, the most senior rank in the team will brief the Commissioner of Police on the outcome of the conference. Over the years lots of insights the team would have garnered during the conference would be deliberated upon and applied to local strategies of crime fighting and policing in Guyana.
