THE Guyana Police Force brought the curtains down last Friday on their annual youth camp 2015, which was held at the Women’s Institute, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara, under the theme: “Working with youth through community partnership for a safer and secure Guyana”. The camp was held for one week and brought together children from across the country, including youth groups which are financed and managed by the Guyana Police Force through their various divisions in ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’, ‘E’, ‘F’ and ‘G’.
Delivering the feature address at the event was Top Cop Seelall Persaud, who also declared the camp closed. He spoke of the main areas of focus for the children over the past week which included life skills training, building self-esteem, domestic violence, interpersonal skills and moral education.
The Commissioner of Police spoke of the importance of dealing with such issues during the camp which was supervised by police ranks and senior members of the Guyana Police scout groups.
Seelall told the gathering of children as well as divisional commanders and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Protection that in most cases the issue of domestic violence comes to the fore when persons have a lack of interpersonal relations with each other or do not understand the importance of it.
The commissioner also spoke briefly on the issue of self-esteem while expressing how impressed he was with the art and craft creations that the children prepared during their one-week at the camp.
Senior Superintendent Maxine Graham who was the person tasked with organising the camp and who is also the police point person on community-related activities was commended by the Top Cop for her efforts and a job well done.
There were no reported cases of incidents among the children who came from various backgrounds and the camp was overall considered a very successful one.
