CSEC, CAPE results to be announced tomorrow

THE Ministry of Education will be announcing the results of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) tomorrow. These results will be announced at a press conference to be held at the National Center for Education Resource Development (NCERD) at Kingston, Georgetown.
Later in the day, the results will be accessible online via the Caribbean Examinations Council website.
Last year, the Ministry of Education announced with pride that Guyana had once again done extraordinarily well at the CSEC examinations, as the country gained four Regional Awards for Outstanding Performance in the May/June 2014 examinations.
Queen’s College reclaimed the top position with its student, Elisa Hamilton, emerging as the top CSEC performer followed by several candidates from schools outside of Georgetown who also claimed top places. These performers all wrote in excess of 17 subjects at their sitting.
Education Minister, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine has indicated that under his leadership, students sitting in excess of the 17 subjects will be administered as this contributes to the extra-lessons industry.
Meanwhile, an improvement in Mathematics was seen as it moved from 28.92 per cent in 2013 to 38.7 per cent last year. And English A recorded a marginal increase from 45.69 per cent to 46.98 per cent while the English B performance remained average.
Both Mathematics and English performances are recorded as “unsatisfactory”, given that neither has exceeded 50 per cent passes over the years.
During the presentation of the 2015 fiscal budget on Monday, Government indicated that it will undertake a detailed and objective study of the weak links in the education system to determine the reason for such a setback. The results of that study will then be used to craft appropriate policy responses.
“We cannot ignore the abysmal results for Mathematics and English in this country, where more than half of our students are unable to establish that they have general proficiency in these two foundational subjects,” declared Finance Minister Winston Jordan during his presentation of the budget.
The education sector has been allocated $33B, which is 14.9 % of the national budget of $221B this year.

Despite the “unsatisfactory” performance of the two imperative subjects at CSEC, Guyana has been recording tremendous achievements in the various subject areas year after year and has been labelled as one of the best performing countries in the Caribbean at the CSEC examinations.
The analysis of the CAPE results has been completed and will be released tomorrow. The CAPE results were accessible online via the Caribbean Examinations Council last Sunday evening. From all indications so far Queen’s College has once again reclaimed the top performing position.
CAPE, unlike CSEC, is voluntary and equivalent to the British Advanced Levels (A-levels) and is intended for university entrance. CSEC on the other hand, marks the end of standard secondary education throughout the Caribbean Region.
