One worker said she was outside as owner of the supermarket, Haun Hua Kang, 30 years, was closing the gates when two gunmen sprung from a white Toyota 212. One of the gunmen attacked Kang while his associate made his way into the supermarket.
The staffer said she, along with another staff member and two customers, rushed to the back of the supermarket, fearing for their lives, as they witnessed the gunmen demanding money from Kang and his wife.
“The boss got nervous and panic so he didn’t fight, he just allow them to do what they had to do,” said the traumatised staffer.
This publication was told that the gunmen slapped both Kang and his wife while threatening to hit Kang with a glass bottle if the money was not handed over. Thereafter, one of the gunmen shot Kang to his left thigh and then both escaped with approximately $100,000 in cash and two bottles of Sky vodka.
The staffer further said that the gunmen fired another shot into the ceiling of the supermarket before making their escape. The entire ordeal lasted for approximately one minute but the police responded quickly. Kang is being treated in hospital.
According to the staffer, the gunmen seemed to be around 26 and 30-years-old. The police were up to yesterday reviewing the footage from a surveillance camera that captured the incident.
Wisdom Supermarket was opened about three months ago at Vryheid’s Lust on the Railway Embankment. This incident occurred three days after the murder of another Chinese national and city restaurateur Zhenjz Su when gunmen invaded his home and battered him and his wife during a robbery.
